SAA Tennis Open was won by top seed Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia. He scored an emphatic 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 victory over second seed Stefan Koubek, of Austria, to capture the title at the Selborne Club earlier today.

Ljubicic admitted earlier in the week he was under pressure back home for choosing to play the SAA Tennis Open rather than the bigger event this week in Marseille.

Ashley Callie

It is with grief that I have to report the death of one of South Africa's finest actresses. Ashley Callie died yesterday, friday 15 February, due to injuries sustained during a vehicle accident. She was 33 years old.

"The young Miss Callie was special because her life is a testament of the unmistakable African talent that has emerged in the post-apartheid society to capture and reflect the essence of change and transformation through the small screen

"Her rise to continent-wide recognition was essentially linked to the multi-award winning soapie, Isidingo which has established itself as the ultimate yardstick of a meaningful and relevant television production that is intuitively connected to the spirit of a new society." Said Pallo Jordan, minister of Arts and Culture.

Ashley Callie was best known for role as Lee Haines on local soapie Isidingo. She won a 2006 Best Actress award is one of four actresses nominated for this year's Stars of Mzansi Awards.

My prayers and thoughts are with the Callie family during thier time of grief.

Ashley, rest in piece. You are, and will always be missed.

Tributes can be made on this website Ashley Callie

Sunday Sport Roundup

Sevens Rugby - Wellington, New Zealand

It was a bittersweet day for South Africa, who in spite of losing in the cup quarterfinals to unfancied Tonga, still managed to win the plate-trophy at the International Rugby Board’s Sevens in Wellington, New Zealand, on Saturday.

Results (Final)
Cup – Final: NZ 22-17 Samoa.
Plate – Final: SA 19-12 Wales.
Bowl – Final: England 12-5 Argentina.
Shield – Final: USA 22-17 Kenya.

Cricket - South Africa

The Proteas appear set to achieve a five-nil whitewash when they take on the West Indies in the fifth and final MTN one-day international at the Wanderers today.

S. Africa won the first four matches comfortably and the West Indies are unlikely to turn things around in the final match, but what may make things more difficult for the South Africans is the emotion surrounding the departure of South Africa's leading wicket-taker, Shaun Pollock.
The red-headed allrounder announced during the last test against the West Indies in January that he was retiring from international cricket, and that the ODI series against the West Indies would be his last.

Golf - Dubai

Tiger Woods' tournament winning streak was in dire danger of being halted as he entered the final round of the Dubai Desert Classic today.
He led after the first two rounds but fell victim to a wayward driver in yesterday's third round (73) which left him four strokes behind leader South African Ernie Els (65) and three behind Swede Henrik Stenson (68).
Els is a three-times winner here, the most ever, and Swede Stenson is a Dubai resident and the defending champion.

A1 Grand Prix - Sydney, Australia

A1 Team South Africa scored its second win of the season when 21-year-old Adrian Zaugg, in the race of his young career, scored a faultless victory in atrocious conditions in round six of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport today.

The South African made an excellent start from sixth on the standing start grid and was up to third in turn two behind Switzerland's Neel Jani and Robbie Kerr of Great Britain.
A series of quickest laps of the race helped Zaugg and the distinctively liveried Vulindlela build up a healthy gap over the rest of the field and, after a slick pit stop, he rejoined the race on lap 29 with a 6,5-second lead over Swiss driver, Neel Jani. At half distance, on lap 21, he was 11 sec clear of the rest of the field.

Current Log:
1 Switzerland - 79 pts
2 France - 60 pts
3 New Zealand - 59 pts
4 Great Britain - 48 pts
5 South Africa - 47 pts

The next race takes place in Durban, South Africa on 24 February 2008.

General Updates

Cape Town for Monopoly

Monopoly is designing a news board. Instead of the traditional street names being placed on the board, City names will be shown.
Heres the catch, they need you to vote for your city, which for us South Africans means the beautiful Cape Town. The 20 cities with the most votes gets placed on the board and the two wild card cities with the most nominations are added.
Currently, Cape Town is number 14 with 1.9% of the votes.
